Krazy House
Not that I felt a Dutch film starring Alicia Silverstone was going to be exactly what I needed and wanted right now, but I was at least highly intrigued and definitely wanted to check this out to give it a shot. The trailer showed a clear inspiration for surreal and absurd comedy similar to that of American lunatics Tim & Eric, and while going that route wasn't entirely original (even SNL has done a few skits copying their strange yet hilarious brand of humor), I was ready for it. The ultimate stamp of quality for me came via Nick Frost in the lead; if he's involved, there is some hope here.
Unfortunately, while technically proficient and they did a good job executing the script, the problem was yet again that very same script. The lack of originality in terms of style remains, but it's then only magnified when the script feels aimless and all over the place. The filmmakers had a basic idea, by itself not all that unique on its own, and then didn't have a real focus on what to do with that idea once the novelty wore off. A gimmick only goes so far, and when this wasn't even funny or horrifying as they attempt to prepare you for, it simply doesn't work.
There is likely some audience for this and all the power to them for finding enjoyment here. But to me, if you're going to be so bold as to lift another artist's style, and so clearly, you better bring the goods. Better luck next time.
