Priscilla
I remember early on in production, news came out that Elvis' music would not be heard in Sofia Coppola's new film about Priscilla Presley, and her time with the legendary singer. That eventuality was not by choice, as far as I understand it. At the time I thought it was a sign of a doomed production, but I couldn't have been more wrong in hindsight, now that I've seen the film. With that restriction placed on the film, the focus is pulled further away from her husband, and towards the namesake of this film. This ends up being one of the film's strengths.
Others include Sofia's omnipresent style that she brings to every one of her films, one of the best in the industry. I think for sure like her last film, On the Rocks, it is toned down here. Likely just a natural progression for Coppola, no matter the reason, but I think it's fair to say her recent films have definitely felt less "Sofia." An observation, not a criticism. The casting and acting are also noteworthy - also to be expected from this director - especially the title role portrayed by Cailee Spaeny, who could not have been more perfect in the role. As to whether she resembles Ms Presley in any way, I can't speak to, but I was impressed with how she portrayed her as quiet, demure, kind, and humble, but also observant, patient, strong and uncompromised. Young and naíve also come to mind, of course, but it really made sense as to why Ms Presley approved of Sofia making this film based on her life. it required a female perspective and sensibility, especially in order to keep the focus on HER, when her life was so entwined with, of all people, the King of Rock & Roll.
'Priscilla' is not a great film, but it's entertaining, an overall pleasant experience, and a lead performance I hope at least receives some awards buzz, if not actual nominations. Her performance has earned it. As for Sofia, she's a tad off track the past few films, I hope she has another one in her that's fit for the zeitgeist. But that's understandably a high bar. In the meantime, this is still recommended.
