Below is Janelle Monae performing the closing track 'Americans' on her latest album, Dirty Computer, where she successfully reminds viewers of the greatness of what the American ideal has always been about, and still can be, whole acknowledging the great progress that has been made and seems to be forgotten as we navigate the hell-scape that is the current president and modern-day Republican Party, a once great political party that has succumbed of late to humanity's darkest instincts. On that note, what really struck me was her interview a few minutes prior to her performance. Once you get past the two reminiscing about a White House party some years ago, Ms. Monae's positivity, optimism and intelligence shine through strongly and humbly, and for this softy, brought about tears. Please watch both as I think they may brighten your day as they did for me.
Anyway, the reason we're actually here is this very, very short film 'Aspirational,' which was shown before the 'Gemini' screening. It's already four years old, but this was the first time I had seen it, and felt it must be shared. It stars Kirsten Dunst, and it's funny, and sadly more relevant now than it was then.
