LAS VEGAS, NV - In my view, there would only be one reason to make a movie about Madonna when she is still with us here on Earth, alive and well, and that would be to not pass up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
A friend mentions to me the other day that there's a movie about Madonna coming out soon, and my first though was "oh great, another documentary." That gut reaction was supported with the movie stills I saw, and though something seemed a tiny bit off, I figured they were old photos I'd not seen before and hey, maybe this could be a good doc after all! However, that's not Madonna. That's actress Jamie Auld, who portrays the now-legendary pop entertainer during her early days in NYC - prior to her explosion onto the American music scene with her 1983 self-titled debut. Those early years included time in The Breakfast Club, her pre-'Everybody' band and possible inspiration for a film of the same name to be released just a few years later.
Who knows if this movie will be good - a faux-documentary as it turns out - but when you're a filmmaker working on a project about the Queen of Pop, and somehow complete luck is on your side and this woman walks in, a dead ringer for the singer of such massive worldwide hits from 'Vogue' to 'Like A Prayer,' you take the risk. That kind of opportunity doesn't come often, if ever, and though it would be strange if the best movie about Madonna Ciccone comes out when she's alive and 60 years young, it will be interesting to say the least, and likely surreal.
